The best fire safety equipment in the world is useless if the people around it do not know how to respond when a fire breaks out. Panic, hesitation, and incorrect actions in the first minutes of a fire are responsible for the majority of fire-related injuries and deaths. Lance Security delivers practical, certified fire safety training courses that equip your staff with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to react correctly — protecting themselves, their colleagues, and your property. We train corporate teams, factory workers, hotel staff, hospital personnel, school employees, and residential estate teams across Kenya.

Course Types

Fire Warden Training

Fire wardens (also called fire marshals) are the backbone of your building's emergency response. Every floor or department should have designated wardens who take charge during an evacuation. Our fire warden course covers:

  • The fire warden's legal duties under Kenya's Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA 2007)
  • Understanding fire behaviour — how fires start, spread, and develop
  • Using the fire alarm system — recognising alarm signals, operating manual call points, and communicating with the fire panel
  • Evacuation procedures — sweeping assigned areas, directing occupants to assembly points, assisting persons with disabilities, and accounting for all personnel
  • Liaising with the Kenya Fire Brigade on arrival — providing building information, confirming evacuation status, and identifying the fire location
  • Post-incident actions — preventing re-entry until the all-clear, documenting the event, and conducting a debrief

Duration: Half day (4 hours). Participants receive a certificate of competence valid for 12 months.

Fire Extinguisher Use

Knowing which extinguisher to use — and how to use it — can mean the difference between putting out a small fire at its source and watching it grow out of control. Our extinguisher training includes:

  • Classes of fire (A, B, C, D, F/K) and the extinguisher types suitable for each
  • The PASS technique — Pull the pin, Aim at the base, Squeeze the handle, Sweep side to side
  • Live fire practical — every participant uses a real extinguisher to put out a controlled fire in a safe training environment (we bring the fire tray and extinguishers to your site)
  • When NOT to fight a fire — recognising when the fire is too large and evacuation is the only safe option
  • Extinguisher inspection — monthly visual checks your staff can perform between professional services

Duration: 2 hours. This module can be combined with fire warden training for a full-day course.

Evacuation Drills

A fire drill is not a box-ticking exercise — it is a rehearsal that saves lives. We plan and conduct realistic evacuation drills at your premises, including:

  • Pre-drill planning — reviewing your fire evacuation plan, identifying assembly points, and briefing fire wardens
  • Announced or unannounced drill execution — we activate the alarm and observe the response
  • Timing and performance measurement — how long did full evacuation take? Were all areas swept? Were doors closed? Were mobility-impaired persons assisted?
  • Post-drill debrief — we present findings to management with clear recommendations for improvement
  • Documentation — a formal drill report for your fire safety file, which is required for compliance with OSHA 2007 and county fire inspections

Certification

All participants who complete our training courses receive a Lance Security certificate of competence. This certificate is recognised by employers, insurance companies, and regulatory bodies as evidence that your staff have received practical fire safety training. We maintain a digital register of all trained personnel and send reminders when recertification is due.

On-Site Training

We deliver all training on-site at your premises. This is not just a convenience — it is a deliberate approach that makes the training directly relevant. Your staff learn to use the fire extinguishers that are actually on their walls, operate the fire alarm panel that is actually in their building, and evacuate along the escape routes they will actually use in an emergency. Training in a classroom at a hotel conference centre does not achieve this level of practical relevance.

We bring all necessary training materials, including presentation equipment, extinguishers, fire trays for live practicals, high-visibility vests for wardens, and printed handouts.

Legal Requirements in Kenya

The Occupational Safety and Health Act 2007 places clear obligations on employers:

  • Every workplace must have a written fire safety policy and evacuation plan.
  • Sufficient employees must be trained as fire wardens to cover all shifts, floors, and departments.
  • All employees must receive basic fire safety awareness as part of their induction.
  • Fire drills must be conducted at regular intervals (best practice is at least twice per year for most workplaces and quarterly for high-risk or high-occupancy buildings).
  • Training records must be maintained and available for inspection by DOSH (Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services) officers.

Failure to comply can result in enforcement notices, fines, and — in the event of a fire incident — potential criminal liability for employers and building managers. Lance Security's training programmes are designed to satisfy these legal obligations fully.

Training Frequency

We recommend the following training cycle:

  • Fire warden refresher — Annually, or whenever wardens change roles
  • Extinguisher practical — Annually for all wardens and security staff; bi-annually for general staff
  • Evacuation drills — At least twice per year for office and commercial buildings; quarterly for hotels, hospitals, schools, and factories
  • New employee induction — Fire safety module within the first week of employment

Group and Corporate Pricing

Our training is priced per session, not per head, making it highly cost-effective for larger organisations. A single fire warden session can accommodate up to 25 participants, and extinguisher practicals are run in groups of up to 15 for maximum hands-on time. We offer discounted annual training contracts for organisations that commit to a recurring schedule, with pricing in KES and no hidden charges.

For factories and industrial operations with shift workers, we can deliver the same course multiple times across different shifts to ensure full coverage without disrupting production.

Invest in the skill that matters most when fire strikes — the ability of your people to respond correctly. Contact Lance Security to discuss your training needs, or request a training quotation today.
